ROCHESTER, Minn. — With the equipment in Olmsted County Adult Detention Center being over a decade old, Sheriff David Mueller is looking to upgrade.
KIMT reports that the facility is currently in the proposal stage and talking options, and is especially eyeing video visitation systems which would allow families to ‘visit’ with inmates across the internet.
“We need to have a system that’s working and in good shape and then what this also provides us is a nice opportunity to look at some of the technology and the things that are going to be useful for the future,” Mueller said.
“This, from a safety and security perspective, is a better system, but we’re ultimately looking to take that next step in allowing us this opportunity from a convenience perspective that will allow people an opportunity to visit someone in our facility from the convenience of their home.”
Aside from which system they would go with, the facility has to decide how it would be paid for.
One option would be to have the county pay for the system, which would amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The other would be to pay for the system through a visitation fee, but that option comes with more restrictions.
