Miss. DOC launching new trash pickup program

Corrections Commissioner Marshall Fisher says in a news release that MDOC will request information from the Mississippi Department of Transportation where inmates are needed for litter control

JACKSON, Miss. — The Mississippi Department of Corrections is launching a program Aug. 1 that will allow state inmates to pick up trash along state highways.

Corrections Commissioner Marshall Fisher says in a news release that MDOC will request information from the Mississippi Department of Transportation where inmates are needed for litter control.

Fisher says inmates from three state prisons and 16 community work centers will be available for work.

Transportation Commissioner Dick Hall had criticized Fisher’s plan to end local inmate work programs. Hall said MDOT contracts with counties and cities to have inmates pick up roadside trash.

Fisher says the program will take care of Hall’s litter problem.

MDOC is allowing participating counties on a case-by-case basis to continue to house inmates in the future without reimbursement, based on request.
