BALTIMORE — A breach in protocol that led to the mistaken release of a murderer has put a corrections employee on paid leave Tuesday.
The Baltimore Sun reports that Rodriquez Purnell, who was being held until his November trial for the fatal shooting of Terrence Rheubottom, 27, in March 2013, currently remains missing.
“The Department’s review will not only include the actions of the employee, but all related policies and procedures,” said officials in a statement on Wednesday. “To see whether anything needs to be changed in the wake of the error, or whether this was simply the result of one employee’s failure to adhere to established policies and procedures.
Rheubottom’s mother, Jacqueline Davis, said that it was only after her family was notified that Purnell was loose that authorities began looking for him. A DOC spokesperson confirmed that the agency learned of Purnell’s release Sunday through a citizen tip, but could not say whether it was from Davis’ family.
