ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — A new video released to the public shows the interior of the Escambia County Jail moments before it exploded.
“You can see the waters rising and you can see the dryers coming loose,” Attorney Bill Eddins told WKRG. “That to me was very striking.”
Two inmates were killed and nearly two hundred people were injured in the ensuing blast after flood waters caused gas lines connected to laundry equipment to rupture.
The video is part of the evidence considered by a grand jury, who eventually found that there was not enough evidence to bring criminal charges against county and jail officials.
Eight months later, the building still remains a crumbled mess, and the grand jury is seeking answers as to why the structure was previously rebuilt with no improvements after a similar flood in 2012.
“We are really very fortunate, in my opinion and from what I know, that we didn’t end up with two or three hundred people being killed,” said Eddings.
