CHICAGO, Ill. – Those involved in an incident where a man visiting an inmate became trapped for 32 hours in a small visiting room will not be disciplined, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s office.

Farad Polk became trapped without food, water or a toilet for over a day when he walked into the wrong room, having visited the jail to visit with his son. He cut his hand activating a sprinkler that eventually alerted authorities to his predicament, and required stitches.

An internal investigation has been completed, and the Cook County Jail executive director said staff in both the lobby and in the room where Mr. Polk would have visited with his son went “above and beyond” to try and find out where Mr. Polk was, according to CBS News.

Allegedly, they had been told by another visitor in the lobby that Mr. Polk had left, leading them to believe he was no longer present on jail grounds.

To prevent this type of event from reoccurring, the jail is now issuing receipts to visitors that they must return when they leave.

Polk has filed a negligence lawsuit against the county.
