CONCORD, NH — The women’s prison in Concord will be delayed a full year due to rising costs, reports the Concord Monitor.

The prison, originally believed to cost $38 million, is now estimated at roughly $58 million according to contractors. State officials are going back to the drawing board to attempt to rein in costs by redesigning aspects of the project.

Once this is done, the project will be put back out to bid, which will delay the original construction timeline.

As a result, officials pushed back the scheduled opening from fall 2016 to Sept. 30, 2017.

Budget for the prison includes not only construction, but also 81 employees who would be hired gradually over two years.

The prison will have four buildings and 224 beds to start, but would be expandable to 350 if necessary.
