TRAVERSE CITY — State prison officials plan to spend about $2.3 million to upgrade security at Pugsley Correctional Facility.

Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Chris Gautz said officials planned upgrades before 13th Circuit Court Judge Philip Rodgers sent department officials a letter that raised concerns about conditions at the minimum security prison in southern Grand Traverse County.

“These are upgrades we are doing at all our facilities,” he said.

Gautz called it a “long-term technology” upgrade that would allow officers to better monitor prisoners. He said upgrades include a new camera system, but declined to discuss more details, citing security concerns.

“Some of it is in the planning stages and some of it is in the process of being installed,” he said.
