FORT WORTH, Texas — A prison inmate was convicted Tuesday of sending threatening mail to the editor of The Dallas Morning News and a federal judge in Fort Worth.
Alan Van DeLaughter was found guilty of mailing threats to damage or destroy property and mailing a threatening communication, according to a news release from the U.S. attorney’s office in Dallas. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and $500,000 fine.
DeLaughter, an inmate at the Allred Unit in Iowa Park, mailed a letter to editor Bob Mong on March 26. The letter stated that a “historical disaster” was going to occur at the federal courthouse in Fort Worth. DeLaughter mailed a letter to U.S. Judge John McBryde that threatened to kill him and his family. DeLaughter is serving a 25-year sentence for a 2005 conviction in Tarrant County.
