This week’s episode covers the topic of law enforcement, and whether correctional officers fall under that category. Host Anthony Gangi speaks with Keith Hellwig, a 35-year law enforcement professional who’s worked both inside and outside the walls.

“One similarity is that you never know what you’re going to encounter,” Hellwig said. “It’s a little different in a prison because you already know who your adversaries are. We know that the inmates are the ones who have to watch.

“A police officer, you have to watch everyone on the street. You have to be a little suspicious of everyone. But another similarity is that you need to treat everyone with respect, if you want to be treated with respect.”

The two dissect Gangi’s article, ‘Yes, corrections officers are law enforcement officers,’ discussing why it’s difficult for police officers, the media and the public at large to accept correctional officers as part of the law enforcement family.

Tell us what you think about the topic in the comments: are correctional officers part of law enforcement, or are they something else?
