CACHE COUNTY, Utah — Though the usual rule for Cache County Sheriff’s Office employees is to be clean shaven, that rule is being suspended to help a deputy who’s facing a medical crisis in his family.
HJ News reports that men in the sheriff’s office have purchased a ‘beard permit’ for $30, which allows them to go without shaving for the month of November.
All the facial hair growth is to help the son of Deputy Brett Horspool, Zac, who is only two years old.
Zac has been diagnosed with GM1 Gangliosidosis, a very rare and always fatal genetic disease. The disorder progressively destroys nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Children diagnosed with the disease rarely live past early childhood.
Horspool works in a different county, but once they heard about the family emergency, the officers in Cache County immediately started thinking of ways they could help.
At the end of the month, they expect the total amount raised will be $2,000.
