RICHMOND, Va. — Corrections officers with the Virginia Department of Corrections showed up at the state capital to support a bill that would improve conditions in their work environment.
NBC News reports that the officers detailed their day to day experiences on the job.
“I’ve been told so many times that my family’s gonna be killed. My children are gonna be raped,” said T. Carter, VA correctional officer.
The officers, whose facilities are facing budget cuts, said they don’t know how their prisons will operate with any further funding loss.
A researcher presented findings to a joint subcommittee after studying staffing and conditions in the Va. DOC. She also spoke about high levels of post-traumatic stress, depression and anxiety.
The panel agreed to work on presenting a bill to the General Assembly during the January session. The proposal would increase funding, pay and training.
