Grand jury offers recommendations for Fla. jail

Jury suggests control of the jail should be returned to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office rather than county commissioners

ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — The same grand jury that found insufficient evidence to bring criminal charges has offered a slew of recommendations to prevent further problems.

The Pensacola News Journal reports that the jury suggests control of the jail should be returned to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office rather than county commissioners.

The jury made six recommendations total, including not rebuilding the booking and detention center on the same site. They stated that the basement of the jail should never have been rebuilt after a previous flooding in 2012.

They suggested a dedicated safety officer be assigned to each shift at the jail; that Pensacola Energy install safeguards that could aid government staff in a future emergency; and that the county review its stormwater control measures to prevent similar flooding of county facilities in the future.

With the criminal portion of the jail investigation complete, the county should now be able to figure out how much of their losses they’ll be able to recoup through federal assistance and insurance.
