ATLANTA — A manhunt is underway after officials said a Rockdale County jail inmate escaped from Grady Memorial Hospital early Monday.

Timothy Shane was taken to the hospital at 8 p.m. Sunday for an evaluation after an attempt to harm himself and escaped on foot around 1:20 a.m., the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office said. He then stole an SUV parked nearby at Piedmont and Auburn avenues, officials told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Shane, 52, crashed the vehicle less than a mile away, at Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard, authorities said. He ran from that scene, they added.

The SUV owner reported a Glock handgun had been stolen from the vehicle, according to authorities.

“Inmate Shane has a history of fleeing, along with felony drug and weapon charges,” the sheriff’s office said. “He should be considered armed and dangerous.”

Shane was arrested by Conyers police and booked Nov. 24 on several charges, according to online Rockdale jail records. They include felony fleeing a police officer, reckless driving, possession of methamphetamine and multiple illegal weapons charges.

Officials said Shane is 5 feet, 9 inches tall with a buzzed haircut. He was last seen wearing a blue hospital gown with no shoes.

The Atlanta Police Department is assisting in the search.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office at 770-278-8000 or contact the office by email at rcso.pio@rockdalecountyga.gov.
