SELMA, Ala. — A second Alabama inmate who escaped custody over the weekend is now back in custody.
Jaden Christopher Maxwell — one of four inmates who fled the Perry County Correctional Prep Center in Saturday’s predawn hours — surrendered to authorities Sunday night, said Fourth Judicial Circuit District Attorney Robert Turner.
“His family and the community commended for arranging a peaceful surrender of Mr. Maxwell,” Turner said in a press release.
Johnny Dave Harris Bush Jr. was taken into custody Sunday afternoon by Midfield police.
Officers about 4:30 p.m. were alerted by the Flock camera system that a stolen vehicle had been detected in the 600 block of Bessemer Super Highway.
The vehicle was a 2012 Acura stolen from Selma on Saturday.
The driver was positively identified as Bush, one of four inmates who escaped from the Perry County Jail on Saturday.
Midfield police said Bush is now charged with receiving stolen property. He will be held in the Jefferson County Jail pending extradition to Perry County.
Marquavious Billingsley and Jaden Maxwell remain at large.
“Law enforcement agencies are working diligently to locate and apprehend the remaining fugitives to ensure the safety of our communities,” Turner said. “Our office is committed to working closely with our law enforcement partners to ensure that those responsible for these crimes are apprehended and held accountable.”
“We appreciate the swift actions of the officers involved in locating and facilitating the arrest of two of the escapees,” Turner said. “We remain committed to ensuring the remaining fugitives are taken into custody and brought before the court.”
The four inmates escaped the Perry County Correctional Prep Center about 1 a.m. Saturday. All four inmates were at the center under an agreement with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.
Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum told Black Belt News Network on Sunday that the breakout was a coordinated plan that involved a fake medical emergency, a waiting getaway car and outside help. Their driver has been arrested.
The four inmates forced their way past two detention officers after one inmate pretended to need medical attention.
“They had an inmate to fake a medical emergency inside one of the pods,” Granthum said. “As the two officers entered the cell, which is protocol, they forced their way past them, through the door, and actually jumped three different fences.”
Granthum said surveillance video captured the entire escape.
