NAPANOCH, N.Y. — A Bronx man in prison for manslaughter died Saturday, July 18, as a result of a fire in his cell at Eastern Correctional Facility, prison officials said Monday.
Marcos Alcaraz was found “unresponsive” in his cell by prison staff at about 1:40 a.m.
Assistant Public Information Officer Nicole March said that after getting the fire under control, facility staff “promptly initiated life-saving measures” on Alcaraz.
He was transported by local emergency management service personnel to Ellenville Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.
Prison officials declined to provide further details about the incident, referring questions to state police, which is handling the investigation.
In an email in response to a Freeman inquiry, state police said they would provide details when they are available.
According to the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision website, Alcaraz, 35, had been incarcerated since 2014 following his conviction for first-degree manslaughter.
He was sentenced to a maximum of 24 years in state prison. Records show that he had an initial parole hearing date set for December 2030, with a conditional release of Feb. 3, 2031, and a maximum release date of July 9, 2034.
Alcaraz was the fourth inmate to die while in custody at Eastern Correction Facility so far this year.
A report issued by the Department of Corrections and Community Services shows that through June 30, three inmates died at the prison. One inmate died of “natural causes,” the report states. The cause of death for the other two was listed in the report as “unknown.”
