SPARTANBURG, S.C. — An investigation is underway after a Spartanburg County deputy shot themself inside the county’s detention center, according to the sheriff’s office.

The incident occurred on Nov. 19 in the facility’s locker room area, away from inmates, WYFF reports. Officials said the deputy was conducting a routine inspection of issued equipment and uniform when a round discharged, striking the deputy in the left thigh.

The deputy received immediate medical attention and is expected to make a full recovery.

According to the sheriff’s office, no detainees were placed at risk and only two deputies were present at the time of the incident.

Preliminary findings indicate the injury resulted from a negligent discharge. The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains active.

In a statement, the agency said it is “committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety, training, and professionalism,” adding that procedures and safety protocols are being reviewed to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
