ANGOLA, La. — A Louisiana corrections sergeant was killed in a vehicle crash on the grounds of the Louisiana State Penitentiary, according to state officials.
Master Sgt. Tyler Grezaffi, 27, was involved in a single-vehicle incident at the Angola prison on March 18, the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections said. She sustained fatal injuries.
Louisiana State Police responded to assist at the request of the penitentiary. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Remembering Master Sgt. Tyler Grezaffi
Grezaffi had served with the Department of Public Safety and Corrections for more than a year and was described as a dedicated and positive presence within the agency.
“Although Tyler Grezaffi was at the beginning of her promising career in public safety and corrections, she had already made a significant impact through her previous roles,” said Gary Westcott, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections. “Her dedication, energy and kindness have left an unforgettable mark on everyone she encountered.”
Officials said Grezaffi was known for her professionalism, commitment and the relationships she built with colleagues.
Career in law enforcement
Before joining the state corrections department, Grezaffi built her career in public service with the Pointe Coupee and Iberville parish sheriff’s offices.
The Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff’s Office remembered Grezaffi as someone who “brought light to everyone around her” and left a lasting impression on both the agency and the community.
Grezaffi also served with the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office in 2019.
“In early 2019, Tyler Grezaffi proudly served as a member of the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office,” Sheriff Brett Stassi said in a statement. “Although her time with us was brief, she demonstrated a deep commitment to the profession and a passion for service that left a lasting impression.”
A loss felt across agencies
Grezaffi was the daughter of Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Scott Grezaffi, a longtime member of the agency.
Colleagues described her as following in her father’s footsteps and dedicating her life to public service.
“Many of us have had the privilege of watching Tyler grow up over the years as she followed in her father’s footsteps and became part of our law enforcement family,” the Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
“Tyler was a beautiful soul who brought light to everyone around her — both within our department and throughout the community. Her kindness, dedication, and bright spirit left a lasting impression on those who knew and worked alongside her,” the statement continued.
Agencies across the region expressed condolences and asked the community to keep her family, friends and coworkers in their thoughts.
