BOSTON — The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department is mourning a correction officer who died Monday after he was struck by a car while helping a stranded driver.
Corporal Brett Martin, 51, was assisting a driver on I-95 in Boxford when he was hit by a car, according to the sheriff’s department. He was taken to a local hospital and later died of his injuries.
Martin began working as a correction officer with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department in February 2008, the sheriff’s department said. He was most recently stationed at a security post in the kitchen at the Suffolk County House of Correction in Boston.
“Corporal Martin was a dedicated, thoughtful and courageous member of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, who exhibited a selflessness, care and concern for others that was evident to all who knew him,” the sheriff’s department wrote.
“His legacy of bravery and self-sacrifice will endure among those with whom he served and among his colleagues throughout corrections and the law enforcement community.”
