NEW YORK — Four New York City correction officers have been indicted in the Bronx on charges they beat up a Rikers Island inmate and then covered up the assault by forging paperwork.

Bronx prosecutors say a grand jury returned a 19-count indictment charging officers Michael Dorsainvil, Christopher Huggins and Mark Anglin with attempted gang assault, falsifying business records and other charges.

Correction officer Ronald Donnelley was charged with falsifying business records and other charges.

Department of Investigation officials say the men beat inmate Carl Williams in a holding cell where he was held down and struck last March on Rikers Island. They say the beating happened after Williams cursed at the officers who threw away his bag of food. Williams received nine stiches to his mouth.
