ONEONTA, NY — Convicted killer Ganesh “Remy” Ramsaran allegedly offered a $100,000 bribe to a Chenango County corrections officer in an attempt to escape from the county jail, the Chenango Sheriff’s Department reported Tuesday night.

Ramsaran, 39, is slated to be sentenced to prison Dec. 1 for his conviction on a charge of second-degree murder, arising from the Dec. 11, 2012 killing of his wife, Jennifer Renz Ramsaran, 36.

The sheriff’s department said Ganesh Ramsaran, a former program manager for IBM, was arrested on the second-degree bribery charge at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday. He was arraigned in Norwich town court, and sent back to the county jail for lack of $1 million cash bail or $2.5 million property bond.

The department said in a news release that Ramsaran offered to pay a corrections officer who was not identified by authorities $100,000 to aid in his escape from the jail, located just south of the city of Norwich. The officer immediately reported the offer to a supervisor, the department said.

The department did not release any other details of the alleged escape plot, other than to say additional charges may be forthcoming.

Chenango District Attorney Joseph McBride, who led the successful prosecution of Ganesh Ramsaran, said the scheme hatched by Ramsaran involved a “specific” method to slip out of custody. He declined to provide details of the plan, but told The Daily Star no other inmates were involved.

The bribe was offered by Ganesh Ramsaran on Tuesday and he was charged later in the day, the prosecutor added.
