LINCOLN COUNTY, Ark. — An officer with the Arkansas Department of Corrections died after suffering a medical emergency while on duty on July 31, the department said in a statement.

Sgt. Fredrick Coleman, 45, experienced a “medical incident while on duty,” department spokesperson Rand Champion told the Arkansas Democrat Gazette. The incident occurred at the Cummins Unit, a high-security state prison in Lincoln County.

Coleman had served with the agency since 2010. In a statement, the department described him as a dedicated public servant who was “known for his strength, kindness, hard work and dedication to the agency and to his fellow officers at the Cummins Unit.”

In 2022, Coleman was awarded the Director’s Outstanding Service Award by Division of Corrections Director Dexter Payne for the “valuable work he performed while at the Cummins Unit.”

“It is with a heavy heart to announce the loss of Sgt. Fredrick Coleman,” the department said in its social media post. “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. He will be deeply missed by his AR DOC and ADC Family.”

No additional details about the medical incident were immediately available.
