STOCKTON, Calif. — Four correctional officers were injured Thursday night when an inmate armed with two improvised weapons attempted to leave his cell at the California Health Care Facility in Stockton, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
The officers were attempting to enter the cell at 9:36 p.m. to conduct a wellness check on an unresponsive inmate when Joadanus Olivas, 39, tried to leave the cell with the weapons. Corrections officials said the officers forced Olivas back into his cell and restrained him.
All four officers were injured, according to the department. They were treated at an outside medical facility and released. Olivas also was taken to an outside medical facility for treatment of his injuries. He was transferred to another state prison, where he remained in restricted housing.

Olivas, 39, entered state prison on Oct. 28, 2010. He was sentenced in Los Angeles County to life in prison with the possibility of parole for attempted second-degree murder.
The case was expected to be referred to the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office for review of possible felony charges. Corrections officials described the incident as an “attempted homicide of peace officers.” The department’s Office of the Inspector General was notified, CDCR said.
The California Health Care Facility, which opened in 2013, houses 2,455 inmates and employs approximately 3,500 workers. The Stockton prison provides medical and mental health care to inmates with severe and long-term needs.
