BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A corrections officer who was attacked by inmates in April at the California prison where he worked died Friday as a result of his injuries, ABC-23 reported.
According to ODMP, Armando Gallegos, 56, and another officer were conducting an inmate search on April 21 at the Kern Valley State Prison when the inmate began to attack. Eleven other inmates joined in until other officers arrived to assist.
Gallegos, a 13-year veteran officer, suffered a broken nose, fractured vertebrae and head injuries. He was released from the hospital, but collapsed at home Friday due to a complication.
Gallegos died later that night at a local hospital.
Investigators hope to charge seven of the inmates who participated in the attack with attempted homicide.
