MORGAN COUNTY, Ala. — The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office announced that four correctional officers were injured by one inmate during booking procedures at the county jail Tuesday.

Sheriff Ron Puckett said in a statement that the incident happened Tuesday. Decatur police arrested 31-year-old Jamie Obrian New of Decatur for public intoxication. While being booked into Morgan County Jail, Puckett said New became “combative” and injured the officers.

All four were transported to Decatur Morgan Hospital where they were treated and released. Puckett said one suffered a concussion, while the other three have injuries to the knee, arm and hand, respectively, and will need to further medical care.

New is now being charged with four felony counts of second degree assault.

“Our corrections officers do a thankless, behind the scenes job,” Puckett said. “I am grateful for what they do and will not accept this type of violence against them. If someone comes into our facility and injures our team they can expect to be fully charged under the law.”
