GREENSBORO, N.C. — A detention officer with the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office who was hospitalized following an inmate attack nearly two weeks ago is beginning to show signs of improvement, WXII 12 reports.

Sheldon Kaminsky was taken off a ventilator Monday, 11 days after an inmate beat him to the point of losing consciousness.

According to his wife Candy, he is now able to respond to some simple commands for a short period of time, but he is not yet fully conscious.

“We still have a very long road to navigate, but we are so very grateful that we seem to now be on a road to recovery,” she said.

Twenty-one-year-old Elijah Evans has been charged with two felonies in the attack on 71-year-old Kaminsky.
