CORCORAN, Calif. — An inmate in California State Prison in Corcoran stabbed two correctional officers with a manufactured weapon on Monday, prison officials said.

In a statement, prison officials said that John Nieto, 28, began stabbing a correctional officer around 4 p.m. with a weapon made in prison. When another correctional officer intervened and Nieto allegedly stabbed that officer as well. Staff were able to subdue Nieto with pepper spray, batons and physical force before shackling him and placing him in an isolated cell.

The two correctional officers went to hospitals for minor stab wounds and have now been discharged.

The stabbing is being investigated as an attempted homicide by California State Prison officials.

Nieto is serving a 21-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter following the 2005 killing of Herman Jiminez in Northridge, a neighborhood of Los Angeles. According to court documents, Nieto didn’t participate in the shooting but was present and admitted to gang enhancement as part of a plea deal.

He has been in Corcoran since Aug. 8, 2008.
