AUGUSTA, Ga. — Two correctional officers who were on duty when an 18-year-old inmate was beaten, which lead to the creation of a viral photo, have resigned.

AJC reports that the Georgia Department of Corrections would not disclose the names of the Burruss Correctional Training Center officers, citing an ongoing investigation.

The inmate in the photo, who sports a black eye and has a leash tied around his throat while two other inmates stand above him gesturing with gang signs, is Cortez Berry, who was serving time for armed robbery and carjacking.

His family says the beating occurred because Berry refused to join the gang. After the photos went viral, Berry was moved to protective custody at Smith State Prison.

The other inmates in the photo have also been transferred.
