VIRGINIA BEACH — Five people were hurt when a car collided with a sheriff’s office van transporting prisoners this morning at South Independence Boulevard and Nesbitt Drive.
A Kia Forte rear-ended the van about 6:20 a.m., according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. The van, driven by a deputy, was going the speed limit of 45 mph when it was hit by the Kia.
Two deputies and three inmates being transported from the jails in Chesapeake and Portsmouth suffered minor injuries. The inmates were taken to Sentara Princess Anne Hospital where they were evaluated then released and taken to jail, the release says. The deputies also were evaluated and released.
Police charged Mikul A. Brown, 26, with DUI first offense, the release says. Brown, of the 3800 block of Rica Drive, was released on a $2,000 secured bond.
