SAN DIEGO — An officer’s protective vest did just what it was meant to do when he was attacked by an inmate during rounds to distribute medication to inmates.

UT San Diego reports that Jason Harmon rushed the officer  at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility and attempted to stab him with a sharpened weapon, but was thwarted by the officer’s vest.

The officer attempted to subdue Harmon, and was assisted by other officers.

Harmon was taken to the hospital for a cut on his head and a possibly broken hand. Then he was removed back to the prison and placed in segregation.

The officer suffered only minor cuts and bruises.

Harmon is serving a life sentence for attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, carjacking, buying or receiving stolen equipment and evading a peace officer while driving recklessly. He has been incarcerated since 2011.
