MURRAY -- A Salt Lake County Jail inmate is accused of attacking a corrections officer last Sunday during a hospital visit.

Corrections officers took the 20-year-old West Jordan man to Intermountain Medical Center so he could receive treatment for self-inflicted wounds, according to charges filed Tuesday in 3rd District Court.

An officer said he felt tugging at his belt when he closed a privacy curtain, charges state. As the officer turned around, the man struck him in the face with his baton.

The officer wrestled with the man as he continued to strike the officer and reach for his sidearm, charges state. The officer managed to gain control of the man and handcuffed him.

The man had been booked into Salt Lake County Jail on Dec. 11 for investigation of possession of a controlled substance. He now faces three charges in connection with the incident at the hospital: aggravated escape, disarming a peace officer and assault by a prisoner -- two first-degree felonies and a third-degree felony.
