In-custody death: Getting ready for the big one

CONCORD, N.H. — An inmate died Friday at the Merrimack County House of Corrections, officials said.

Gary W. Gross, 40, of Concord died at approximately 9:30 p.m. after being found unresponsive in his single occupancy cell, said Superintendent Ronald White. Facility and medical staff attempted lifesaving measures while awaiting paramedics.

Gross was serving a sentence for drunken driving and violating probation, White said. He had been in custody since Dec. 26 and was scheduled for release in June or July.

The cause of death is under investigation by the county sheriff’s office and the state coroner’s office, White said. Crisis counseling is being offered to staff and inmates.

Immediate family members were notified in person by sheriff’s department investigators and Concord police.
