Suit claims inmate fell off his bed the day he died, and was allowed to lie “in a state of unconsciousness for an unreasonable amount of time”

BROOME COUNTY, NY — A correctional officer with the Broome County Jail is facing charges for allegedly failing to help an inmate who was suffering from seizures.

TWC News reports that Salladin Barton died in January when he was found unresponsive in his cell. A lawsuit filed in his behalf alleges that Barton was beaten, abused and denied food.

The suit claims that Barton fell off his bed the day he died, and was allowed to lie “in a state of unconsciousness for an unreasonable amount of time.”

Three out of four toxicology reports came back showing no presence of drugs in Barton’s system.

The suit is seeking damages from the county and other defendants.
