Sandra Bland’s family sues jail, two correctional officers, others

The family believes that more information about the incident would be forthcoming if the DOJ was involved in the investigation

CHICAGO — The family of Sandra Bland, a woman found dead in a Texas jail cell, have filed a suit against the Waller County Sheriff’s Office, two jailers and others.

ABC News reports that the suit seeks unspecified damages.

Sandra Bland was found dead in her Waller County Jail cell on July 13 after being arrested during a traffic stop that escalated.

A medical examiner ruled her death a suicide by hanging, which the family continues to refute. The results of a second, private autopsy have not been released, and the family believes the county is withholding information.

Bland’s family believes more facts about the incident would be released if the Department of Justice was involved with the investigation.

The family wants Bland’s arresting officer, Trooper Brian Encina, fired for violating Bland’s constitutional rights. They also argue that the jail and jailers are responsible for failing to protect Bland while she was in custody.
