SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah corrections agency is mourning the loss of a veteran sergeant whose career spanned three decades inside the state’s prisons.

The Utah Department of Corrections announced that Sgt. Robert Hill died following a vehicle accident as he was driving home from his shift on Feb. 15. He had served with the department for 30 years.

Over the course of his career, Hill worked in a variety of assignments, including in the maximum-security unit at the department’s former Draper facility. At the time of his death, he was assigned to Enforcement at the Utah State Correctional Facility.

Colleagues described Hill as someone who consistently stepped up for his team. According to the department, he was known for his deep knowledge of the job, his willingness to help others and his commitment to training fellow officers. He frequently volunteered for extra shifts and helped train coworkers, earning a reputation as someone others could rely on.

In a statement, Executive Director Jared Garcia called Hill’s death a significant loss for both the agency and the broader law enforcement community.

“The passing of Sgt. Hill is a profound loss for our department and for our entire law enforcement community,” Garcia said. “We extend our deepest sympathies to Robert’s loved ones and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”

The department said Hill’s hard work and dedication will be long remembered by those who served alongside him.
