SHIRLEY, Mass. — Five prison guards were injured Tuesday during an incident at Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, according to the Massachusetts Department of Correction.

An inmate assaulted a corrections officer at 8:15 a.m. in the GI general population unit, according to the statement supplied by the Massachusetts Department of Correction. An officer assigned to the unit radioed for help and the area was secured, authorities said.

After the incident, three other inmates who were involved were removed from the unit, authorities said, and four correction officers were taken to an area hospital for treatment.

The prison was locked down and remains locked down.

The facility is a maximum-security prison that in 2017 experienced an incident where 15 inmates were indicted for destroying inside the building. In the same year, former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was found dead in his cell at the facility.

The incident was reported to the Worcester County District Attorney as it remains under investigation.

The names of the officers involved were not released.
