BIBB COUNTY, Ala. — An inmate at the Bibb Correctional Facility in Brent has been charged in connection with the Monday stabbing of a guard, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.

Wendell Tyrell Jones, 36, was charged with stabbing the guard, who was taken to a nearby hospital and is in stable condition.

According to a news release from the Department of Corrections, the stabbing happened during the noon meal in the facility’s dining hall. Jones attacked the guard from behind, according to the news release, and was able to defend himself until help arrived.

Officials said they recovered a makeshift weapon they believe was used in the attack, but they don’t know what led to the stabbing. No other correctional officers were injured in the incident.

Jones is serving a 20-year sentence for a 2011 domestic violence conviction out of Marengo County.

The Bibb Correctional Facility will remain locked down until an investigation into the incident is complete. The facility is a medium custody level prison with 1,838 inmates, which is 200 percent higher than its design capacity.
