RIKERS ISLAND, N.Y. — Two Rikers Island corrections officers are recovering after a mentally ill inmate slashed them with a ballpoint pen.

The New York Daily News reports that inmate Jerroid Dubois, 52, attacked the officers Friday morning, leaving one officer with a cut on the forehead and the other sliced on the cheek. The motive for the attack remains unclear.

“The inmate who perpetrated this cowardly attack was promptly arrested and removed from the general population,” said Correction Department spokesman Peter Thorne, adding Dubois will face “serious consequences.”

Elias Husamudeen, president of the Correction Officers Benevolent Association, took the opportunity to criticize NYC’s mayor, calling the COs “victims of Mayor de Blasio’s failed jail policies that have only emboldened the inmates to assault us.”
