PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Rhode Island State Police have charged a second inmate in the stabbing of a correctional officer last month at the Adult Correctional Institutions.
Joshua H. Becker, 31, whose last known address was 218 Slate Hill Road, Cranston, is accused of providing the weapon that another inmate used to stab the correctional officer May 11 at the ACI’s maximum security facility, according to the Rhode Island State Police.
Rhode Island State Police detectives say Becker gave inmate John Carillo, 79, “a sharpened piece of metal commonly referred to as a “shank” that the police say Carillo used to stab the guard. Carillo, an inmate serving life for fatally stabbing a correctional officer 45 years ago, was arrested May 11 and charged with felony assault, assault on a correctional officer, and disorderly conduct.
The correctional officer was treated at Rhode Island Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries after the assault.
Becker was charged with conspiracy to commit an assault with intent to commit a felony, conspiracy to assault a corrections officer and possessing a weapon. He was arraigned on Wednesday in District Court, Warwick, and bail was set at $25,000 with surety. He also was presented as a bail violator and was remanded back to the ACI, pending further court action, the state police said.
Becker is serving 15 years of a 30-year sentence on charges of first-degree robbery, felony assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault with the intent to commit a felony in connection with the armed robbery of a gas station in Smithfield in 2010.
Carillo is serving a life sentence for the murder of correctional officer Donald Price in 1973.
