ST. HELENS, Ore. — For the last two weeks deputies at the Columbia County Jail have recorded their interactions with inmates using newly purchased body cameras.

Sheriff Jeff Dickerson said his office purchased 30 Taser Axom cameras along with the support equipment for roughly $24,000.

Dickerson said he added the cameras to increase transparency and protect against unfounded misconduct allegations.

“I’ve always looked at what we do and wanted to be completely transparent with the public, and this provides a tool for that,” Dickerson said.

He also plans to equip enforcement deputies with the cameras in the coming weeks, after they are trained on the equipment.
