SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Around 20 inmates were involved in a riot at California State Prison, Sacramento, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

CDCR said staff used chemical agents, non-lethal rounds and warning shots to stop the violence and restore order on Nov. 10. Four inmates were taken to an outside hospital for treatment, and investigators later recovered four improvised weapons from the scene.

No staff members were injured. Prison operations have been modified while CDCR investigates what led to the riot.

Support services, including peer support and employee assistance programs, are available for staff. The California Correctional Peace Officers Association has been notified.

The incident comes just days after two correctional officers at the same facility were hospitalized following an inmate attack that’s being investigated as an attempted homicide. In that case, officials said staff used physical force and chemical agents to stop the assault, and an improvised weapon was recovered. Both officers were listed in fair condition.

The 4 Cs of inmate management: Maintaining order involves more than just searching and counting inmates and performing inspections. It involves understanding your inmate population.
