Federal prison inmate injured, airlifted in Fla.

SUMPTER COUNTY, Fla. — A male inmate at the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex in Sumter County was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center Wednesday afternoon after sustaining injuries at the prison.

Cpt. David DeLand of Lake-Sumter EMS confirmed that emergency workers from his agencies responded to a trauma alert at the Coleman Complex Wednesday afternoon, and that the injured man was flown by helicopter to ORMC. DeLand said that a trauma alert can refer to injuries ranging from stab wounds to multiple broken bones, to head trauma.

Charles Ratledge, a spokesman for the Coleman Complex, confirmed that a male inmate was injured at the prison at approximately 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. No other inmates or staff members were injured in the incident, and the facility is now secure.

Ratledge said that the FBI has been notified about the incident and has begun an investigation. He would not specify how the inmate was hurt or what injuries the inmate sustained.
