MARION COUNTY, Ind. — The Marion County Sheriff’s Department has fired a deputy and disciplined two others for leaving an inmate without food in a court holding cell for more than 48 hours, authorities said today. It was not immediately known when the inmate, James Logan, was arrested but he was being held on charges of dealing cocaine, possession of cocaine and narcotics, and resisting law enforcement.

Logan was held more than 48 hours in a court holding cell without benefit of food. The cell had water and toilet facilities. Sunday, Logan was transferred to the Marion County Jail and examined by jail staff. The department’s Internal Affairs Section conducted “a thorough investigation” and, as a result, fired Deputy Tucker M. Parker.

It also gave Deputy Richard A. Edgemont a two-day suspension and demoted James L. Wampler from lieutenant to sergeant, suspended him for 10 days and transferred him out of courtroom security detail. The Sheriff’s Department said the deputies were found to be in dereliction of their duties.
