Calif. prison officials seek delay of inmate deadline

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Prison officials in California are seeking a two-month delay to meet their first court-ordered target for reducing the state’s inmate population, after federal judges changed the rules at the last minute.

KCRA reports that Monday was the deadline for the reduction of the state’s prison population to 143 of their designated capacity. The CDCR missed the mark by 216 inmates.

Officials originally believed they would reach the goal, that is, until the judiciary panel ruled last week that only part of the new prison in Stockton could be used.

The judges invited the state to seek the extension, acknowledging that their last-minute decision left the state little time to adjust.
